Here at Chill, we are firm believers that fertility preservation is the ultimate act of self-care. Generally, egg freezing is the common thread used to reclaim your time and freedom and weave your own path, whatever it leads to. Not only is it a safety net if you are unsure if you want children, simply aren’t ready for parenthood or have more immediate goals: it is also a wonderful family planning tool too. In case you weren’t too sure, at Chill, egg freezing is available for anyone with eggs, no matter if you identify as non-binary, trans, intersex or cis-gender.
Egg freezing has become increasingly popular, with the amount of egg freezing cycles almost doubling every three years, according to the Australia and New Zealand Assisted Reproduction Database reports. And, despite the increase in egg freezing cycles and growing demand for fertility preservation, members of the LGBTI+ community may find navigating the delicate process marginalising. Clinics and clinicians are often ill-equipped to cater to the needs of trans, non-binary and gender diverse patients with the use of outdated (and politically incorrect) terminology.
So, how is Chill different?
As a progressive company, we aim to break from conservative societal ideologies which exclude the LGBTI+ community, and pioneer inclusive fertility care for all.
At Chill we pride ourselves on our ability to provide high-quality care catering to the needs of our LGBTI+ patients. We recognise the diverse needs of the community and actively work towards building greater knowledge, inclusiveness and allyships.
We take it upon ourselves to partner with trailblazing companies such as Beyond Gender and ACON to ensure our team is as informed and prepared to care for our patients as possible. Our clinics are designed to be a safe space for all, no matter of gender, sex or sexual orientation.
What can you expect?
Aside from inclusive fertility care, there’s some other important things to note before you embark on your egg freezing journey.
To begin, a specialist will ensure you are medically healthy to undergo treatment. From here, a Fertility Nurse Coordinator then explains the process, medication and potential side effects and risks involved before you go ahead with the procedure.
The Egg freezing treatment cycle generally follows these steps:
- Pre-treatment tests and preparation.
- Egg freezing treatment information and discussion.
- Follicle growth treatment – fertility medications are taken to stimulate the ovaries and encourage the growth of follicles containing the eggs.
- Observing of follicle growth – developing follicles are examined with ultrasound and/or blood tests to regulate their size and quantity.
- Egg collection – once follicles are developed enough, they are carefully emptied to collect the eggs. This procedure is performed by the treating specialist after you have been given a general anaesthetic or light sedation.
- Vitrification – eggs are frozen and placed in storage in liquid nitrogen.
